Head and Neck Surgeon
What is a head-and-neck surgeon and what are diseases of the head and neck?
An otolaryngologist is a head-and-neck surgeon. Otolaryngologists are trained in the medical and surgical treatment of patients with disorders and diseases affecting the ears, nose, throat, and related areas of the head and neck. Otolaryngologists are commonly referred to as ENT physicians.
Specialties of a head-and-neck surgeon range from diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the sinuses, larynx, oral cavity, mouth and throat, and structures of the neck and face. Their skills are not limited to adults, as head and neck surgeons also treat children.
Diseases affecting the head and neck are quite extensive. Ear disorders include ear infections, fluid in the middle ear, and hearing loss. Other conditions range from skin cysts in the ear, ear drum repair, ear tubes, and ear canal reconstruction. The nose and sinuses can be affected by nasal fracture, deviated septum, loss of smell, acute sinusitis, and other sinusitis conditions such as chronic sinusitis, fungal sinusitis, sphenoid sinusitis, and maxillary sinusitis.
Sleep disorders consist of snoring, upper airway resistance syndrome, and sleep apnea. Further, oral cavity and mouth disorders range from dry mouth, burning mouth, tonsillitis, and reflux. Salivary glands can be affected by chronic salivary gland infection and benign or malignant tumors.
Neck disorders include congenital anomalies, abscesses, and tumors. Further, head-and-neck surgeons treat thyroid conditions ranging from various carcinomas to goiter and Graves disease.
